Why has the definition of "liberal" changed so much?

Time was, liberalism was simple and sane. They were for helping the poor,they were against capital punishment, and there were other issues which were similarly sane and predictable. Now, Liberalism has gotten out of control, actively advocating the end of conservatives, advocating illegals being able to just come in with no regard for the law, calling an unborn human a "blastocyst" to justify killing it for no better reason than that the condom broke or they forgot to take the pill. Time was, liberals could lay claim to some kind of responsibility. Now they haven't even that. Has liberalism really gone that far to the dogs?
