Compare and contrast guitar scales and modes for me please?

I have been learning about modes lately (Ive been playing for 3 years but barley look at theory) and from my comprehension of it is that the modes are just the different versions of that scale? So am I correct or way of base? And if I'm wrong than what is the difference?
