How to fingerpick acoustic guitar?

So I taught myself how to play guitar last year and I can play all the chords except barre chords (it sucks, I know...but I'm working on it.). I write songs and song with basic chord progressions and plain old strum patterns. I love the sound of fingerpicking or picking (whatever you call it). I have trouble with it though. Any tips?
