A question about fate or destiny?

If someone were to cheat fate, per say, how would they go about it? I have this theory that if you wind up doing something that was not predetermind and not meant to happen that fate has to give you one wish or one request for being clever or powerful enough to outdo them. Has that theory ever been attempted in folktales or myths of any sort? I'm not looking for religious answers. Just any stories or proof that it could be true.
